July 11 Class

Public Speaking & Communicating through the Media

Saturday, July 11th marks the 2nd class of the 2009 Institute for 29 of San Antonio's community leaders.  Elaine Ayala of the Express News and Lorraine Pulido Ramirez of LPR Strategic Marketing and Public Relations designed an interactive experiential approach to improve communication skills, successfully contacting the media and confidence in public speaking.

CLI Community Projects

The 2009 Community Projects are in the 2nd part of their planning stage.  The groups are facilitated through the ToP(R) Group Facilitation Methods in order to experience structured participatory planning.  One of the CLI Community Project groups will be working in the area of financial literacy by partnering with the United Way Family Strengthening Issues Council "Access" (Alamo City Coalition for Economic Self-Sufficiency) project.  A second group will organized to help prepare kids for school in their "Shoes for Kids Projects". The group plans to conduct a back to school shoes drive for young children with limited resources who are starting school in the fall and provide additional services to the community on the date of the event.  The third group is organizing the 2009 Institute Graduation, organizing a major event for a community nonprofit where their challenge is to effectively communicate the organization's work through the presentation of their community projects, networking with supporters, and communicating to the media the importance of leadership development for community advocates through their experience at CLI.

The CLI Community Projects serve as a lab for the application of their newly acquired skills .  The students develop a deeper awareness of individual leadership styles, cultural diversity and more a constructive engagement of conflict approach working with groups and coalitions gaining an appreciation for the assets each diverse style and culture brings to the table.  Equipped with core leadership skills experience practical applications of their learning, while directly impacting the San Antonio community through their work with these community group projects.  The students are supported by CLI staff through this learning process and walk away with a renewed sense of commitment and empowerment ready to impact their respective organizations in working with families, elderly, children, and youth in a broad range of service areas.

2009 Institute is underway!

CLI's 9th annual Institute is off to a great start with the CLI Alumni hosted Class of 2009 Mixer held at the San Fernando Cathedral Hall on the evening of Friday, June 12, 2009.  Attended by community leaders, alumni, board of directors and supporters, the event provided the Class of 2009 the opportunity to learn about the previous cohorts' experience going through the program.  After a savory dinner catered by the San Antonio Food Bank, Alumni and Class of 2009 broke out into two groups.  The Class of 2009 shared their experiences and current work in the community and their inspiration for participating in the Institute.  Most students expressed their own experiences of receiving guidance of a community leader in their past who has inspired them to give back to the community in their work.  Meanwhile, CLI Alumni conducted a session discussing current issues in the community and planning upcoming Alumni network luncheons to strategize their advocacy.

Saturday morning marked the Institute's first class, Effective Leadership Styles, facilitated by Margaret Oser, United Way and Martha Castilla, Edgewood Family Network.  The students identified their own leadership style using the Social Style assessment tool, broke out into groups according to each style and were asked to present a poem, skit or song describe their style.  The Social Styles assessment provides individuals with the opportunity to reflect on and validate their particular leadership style.  Ms. Oser guides the students on how to "flex" their style to the style of others in an effort to maximize the talents found within working groups.

Martha Castilla led the class on a session using Don Miguel Ruiz' 4Agreements.  Emphasizing how living by these agreements provide a solid foundation in leadership in their communities, the agreements provide the students with a template to apply to their own personal development and that of their organizations' in building relationships and improving positive communication.

The students ended the day with setting up planning meetings to strategize with their three community project groups.  Using ToP Group Facilitation Methods Action Planning Process, the group will experience how to collectively design a community project using a participative and inclusive approach.
